Estimates quantities and costs of materials/equipment/labor. Provides technical guidance on structural design issues from the preliminary engineering process through construction. Analyzes structures for safe load carrying capacity and perform structural calculations to ensure soundness and compliance of structural elements. Provides technical guidance and support related to bridge construction activities, issues, and problems. Serves as project manager for new bridge design and bridge rehabilitation projects, ensuring effective plan development by coordinating design activities with other sections, divisions and consultants. Maintains accurate project records and correspondence. Reviews shop plans to ensure they meet AASHTO and VDOT specifications, are geometrically correct and meet requirements of project design plans.Minimum QualificationsKnowledge of civil engineering principles and practices related to structural engineering to include strength of materials, statics, structural analysis, structural steel design, reinforced and pre-stressed concrete design, soil mechanics, and quantity/cost estimation. Ability to perform detailed engineering calculations. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Skill in the use of structural design and analysis software and drawing tools to develop structural designs for simple and complex structures. Requires valid PE license.Preferred QualificationsExperience in bridge design engineering, repair, and rehabilitation and managing projects and/or consultant contracts. Experience performing structural analysis and ratings of existing bridge structures. Knowledge of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and bridge design experience governed by the specification. BS in Civil Engineering. Experience using MS Office and Microstation CADD software.Special RequirementsValid operator's license. References and work history will be verified. $62,726 - $85,000) level from this same applicant pool if an A/E II finalist is not successfully identified through the recruitment process. Preferred qualifications for Architect/Engineer I successful completion of the Fundamental of Engineering Examination (EIT) and/or BS in Civil Engineering or related study area. Additional A/E II positions may be filled from this recruitment as necessary.
